File manager for macOS

Work with your files, faster.

Porpoise is a native file manager for macOS with split view, an integrated terminal, tabs and panels. It works with the Finder features you rely on, from tags and Quick Look to iCloud Drive and familiar shortcuts. Inspired by KDE Dolphin.

Built for the way you work.

Thoughtful tools for everyday file work, in an app that feels at home on macOS.

Split view and tabs

Work in two folders side by side and move files between them with a drag. Open as many tabs as you need; your windows are restored the next time you launch.

Integrated terminal

Press F4 to open a terminal beneath your files. It follows the folder you're viewing, and changing directory with cd updates the view.

Panels

Places with collapsible sections, a folder tree, and an Information panel with large previews and inline playback.

At home on macOS

Tags, aliases, Quick Look, Get Info, Services, AirDrop, iCloud status and the shortcuts you already know. Light and dark looks that switch with macOS, and fast search of names and contents.

Remote locations

Browse SFTP, FTP, SMB and WebDAV servers and Android devices just like local folders.

App library

Applications opens as a clean grid of apps with instant search. Remove an app with ⌘⌫ or by dragging it to the Trash, and install one by dropping it in.

Rich previews

Thumbnails for images, documents and video in every common format, including MKV, WebM and AVI, with smooth zooming.

Careful with your data

Undo for file operations, clear conflict handling that never overwrites silently, and Put Back from the Trash. Grant permissions once during setup, and Porpoise won't interrupt you again.

Automatic updates

Porpoise can check for updates daily and install them in a single click, keeping your settings and permissions intact.

Google Drive

Your cloud files.
Your familiar tools.

Connect your Google account and browse My Drive, Shared with me and shared drives alongside the folders on your Mac.

Work across locations

Upload, download, copy, move, rename and trash files, or create folders, with the same commands you use locally. Follow transfers in Activity.

Ready when you're offline

Choose Keep Downloaded for files or whole folders. Porpoise keeps a copy on your Mac and checks for changes when connected. Remove Download frees the local copy.

A direct connection

Your Mac talks directly to Google. Porpoise has no server and no analytics. Account credentials stay in your macOS Keychain.

Google Drive is currently a preview while Google's verification is pending; access may be limited. Google Docs, Sheets and Slides open in your browser. Read how your data is handled.

Install

Download Porpoise.dmg, open it and drag Porpoise into your Applications folder.

Confirm the first launch

Porpoise is distributed outside the Mac App Store, so macOS asks you to confirm it once. Go to System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway.

Complete setup

A short welcome guide helps you grant the permissions Porpoise needs. It takes a moment, and you only do it once.

Requires macOS 15 Sequoia or later on a Mac with Apple silicon. Updates are delivered within the app.

Free and open source.

Porpoise is licensed under the GPL and developed in the open. Feedback, bug reports and contributions are always welcome.
